Open Letter: UNC’s Surveillance of Faculty E-mail

During summer 2021, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill administrators authorized the general counsel’s office to monitor the e-mail and cloud storage accounts of an unknown number of faculty and staff members. As reported by NC Policy Watch and the Daily Tar Heel, faculty voiced concerns related to academic freedom and participant confidentiality in academic research. In response to faculty questions and public requests for guidance on the public records issues related to the investigation and the documents, the NC Open Government Coalition published the following open letter.
