N.C. Senator Graig Meyer Wins Sunshine Award for Public Service

The North Carolina Open Government Coalition presented the Sunshine Award for Government Service to N.C. Senator Graig Meyer for his efforts to publicize anti-transparency policies and procedures at the North Carolina legislature.

In September 2023, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a sweeping legislative privilege law that allowed lawmakers to decide for themselves what records they create and receive would be considered public records. The move undid decades of access law in North Carolina and closed off access to legislative records unless a member wants to share information with the public. The new law also makes redistricting records confidential and gives lawmakers the power to destroy and even sell their records.

Senator Meyer, a Democrat, has been the most vocal critic of the new law and has worked with colleagues across the political spectrum to call for a commitment to transparency at the legislature. He has also been critical of a new secret investigative unit in the Joint Legislative Commission on Government Operations and has fought for better transparency into state and local personnel records during the last several legislative sessions.

“No elected leader in Raleigh has been as clear-eyed and committed to transparency in the last several critical months as Graig Meyer,” said Brooks Fuller, director of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition. “Senator Meyer said at Sunshine Day that it’s ridiculous that he’s getting an award just for doing his job, but in this moment that deserves to be recognized. I hope more elected leaders follow his example.”

The Sunshine Award for Government Service is presented to a government employee or official who demonstrates a profound commitment to freedom of information and takes steps to providing public information to members of the public. The award was presented at the annual N.C. News and Information Summit held at North Carolina Central University on Sunshine Day.

Editor’s Note: Sen. Graig Meyer’s spouse, Kym Meyer, serves on the NC Open Government Coalition Board of Directors. Per the coalition’s conflict of interest policy, Kym Meyer took no part in the consideration or the vote related to the 2024 Sunshine Awards.
